A slightly modified version of the original flag, in use since 1954, was formally adopted in 2006. In the descending order of yellow, blue, and red, the three equally sized horizontal stripes of Venezuela’s flag represent the gold of the Americas (yellow), the Atlantic Ocean (blue), and the bloody old word dominance from which freedom was won (red). An arch made up of eight five-pointed stars is centered in the blue stripe, representing the eight provinces that existed at the time of Venezuelan independence. In the top left-hand corner of the flag rests the country's coat of arms.
